Time is precious, and the Pitch Wars mentors have been spending a lot of it. On us. Buying their books is one way to help them. However, as much as I’d like to throw my wallet open and buy every single one, I’m just not Miss Moneybags. However I do have a library card, and libraries have great purchasing power.
If you’re an avid reader, you may already be aware of an app called Overdrive (available on Android, iPhone, or web browser). If you’re not, it’s free! It connects you to ebooks and audiobooks that your local library network has, and you never have to leave your couch. All you need is a library card and a computer/phone/tablet.
If enough people demand a certain book, they’ll buy a copy. If it’s popular, they’ll buy multiple copies. Let’s demand the mentor books! (You can find the list here: http://www.brenda-drake.com/buy-mentors-books/) Here’s how you demand books through Overdrive:
Step 1 – Search
After logging into Overdrive and selecting your library, search for the book in question.
Step 2 – Verify
If you’ve already recommended the book in question, you’ll see a little green checkmark. No need to recommend it again. You only get one vote. Go back to step one and search the next book.
Step 3 – Recommend
If the library doesn’t have a copy of the book, a button will appear for you to recommend a title. Click it.
Step 4 – Select
A list of titles will appear. Find the one you want and hover your mouse over it. A “Recommend” button will appear over it. Click that.
Step 5 – Email
You will need to select if you want the book to be automatically checked out if the library gets the book. Either way, you will need to enter an email address. Don’t worry, they don’t spam people.
Step 6 – Submit
After entering the correct email address twice and hitting the Recommend button, you are done! When you see this confirmation, you know you were successful.
This is such a great idea! Just one thing everyone should know – not all libraries that use Overdrive accept recommendations. So if you can’t find the right buttons and functions to do it, it’s not necessarily you being tech-stupid. It could just be a library that doesn’t accept recs. Like mine. 🙁
